Putting together our Design/Build team
The most important advice that I can give to someone who is thinking about starting a ‘green’ project is… keep an open mind, do the research and be persistent. Being open to all options is how we put together our team. Green sources and resources are literally everywhere! It’s amazing how helpful and generous the people in this industry can be.
When it came time to pick an architect and contractor all I knew was that I wanted to build and design a ‘green’ property. We wanted people with experience in this area since we were basically clueless. So I started making calls, writing emails, contacting everyone I could think of that might help us.

One call led us to a business called Green Goods. I had visited the shop before and was impressed with the amount of green options available for building and finishing a home. (See link below ) One of the owners, Mikel Robertson is also a co-founder of a green building website that was started to, “focus on the issues of sustainable development and to “grow” green building on the central Coast. (See link below)
Mikel was very well connected with local builders and architects and willing to help us in our search. After talking with us about our goals and priorities he set up meetings with three local architects and two builders all of whom had extensive experience in green building and design. He sat in on the meetings and helped us determine which person was the best fit for our project.
Mikel was extremely important and helpful to us. We have been working with our architect, Thom Brajkovich now for several months and feel he is perfect for our needs. The contractor, Frank Cullen is starting to gear up for our project and has attended many of the meetings with Thom. More on these two important people in up coming posts!
Thank you Mikel and we look forward to returning to ”Green Goods” to finish our new homes and ranch buildings.
