Progress at GHP

It’s been a long time since my last post…but I will be making up for that in the next few weeks.  A lot has been going on at the new Huasna Ranch.  The hay barn is nearing completion, the 20 acre pasture is fenced and the two run-in barns are finished.  The covered arena needs only the lights, a fence and the final footing and the stables are about 50% completed.  The big news is that we now have permits for the two homes and the foundation has been poured on the first.  In my next posts I will share the different materials we are using to be more environmentally friendly.  I will also introduce two new members of the “green team” and hopefully they will contribute to this blog.
So for now, here is a link to the GHP photo album where I have posted a few new photos.

Contractor’s Notes; Greywater and Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater Catchment Pond Plan

Huasna Valley averages 20 inches of rainfall annually.  In other words every drop counts.  When looking at the water use for this project we wanted to ensure that we were being responsible with the water that would be used.  The two areas we focused on were Rainwater Harvesting and Greywater systems to provide water for landscaping features and irrigation.

The green growing season

Here are a few photos of The GHP in rainy season when the pastures are growing and wild flowers are blooming.   I also added a current photo of the Hay barn which is looking really fantastic!  And the new covered arena is also in the background.  Jackie is standing almost knee high in our planted horse pasture.

Preparing the foundation

In mid January after some delays, we finally got the permits for the stable, arena and hay barn.  Frank Cullen went right to work digging the foundation for the buildings.

In this photo the hay barn foundation is in the foreground.  Beyond the equipment you can see the 20 acres of planted pasture and on the right the foam walls  for the barn are waiting to go up.  We have had a lot of rain and will need to wait until it drys a bit to pour the concrete.
